"I think Freddie's cute and smart." |
iWin a Date is the 24th episode of the first season of iCarly.
Plot
In order to help Gibby get a date with his crush, Shannon, who is much more interested in Freddie, Carly decides to have a dating segment in iCarly named "I Win a Date." After Shannon and her friends, Selene and Julia, accept Sam's invitation to join them in iCarly, Sam and Carly let Gibby know before the show that everyone's voices are going to be electronically disguised to keep their identities a secret from each other. When Gibby is worried he won't pick Shannon, they give him a clue to which girl Shannon is to make sure he chooses her instead of her friends ("If you really want TWO go on a date with Shannon, then you need TWO choose carefully! That's all you have TWO do!") Unfortunately, only Shannon appears without her friends (they cannot attend the show because they went to see Girly Cow on Ice instead), so Carly and Sam become their replacements with Carly as Girl Number 1, Shannon as Girl Number 2, and Sam as Girl Number 3, and Freddie hosts the show in their place. The girl Gibby picks will join him for a dinner for two at The Cheesecake Warehouse.
As the game begins, Gibby begins asking each of the girls' questions; to ensure that he picks Shannon, Carly gives loads of reckless responses while Shannon gives more traditional ones. In the middle of the show, Sam gets bored and sneaks' downstairs to eat a bowl of cold chili, leaving Carly and Shannon as the lone contestants. At the end of the show, however, Gibby accidentally chooses Carly instead of Shannon, and Carly has to date him, much to her dismay. Gibby realizes his mistake and tells Carly she doesn't have to come to the date, but she does want to do the date anyway despite nerves at being alone with her. At school, Carly sets Sam up with Reuben (a friend of Gibby's who speaks in terms that only Gibby seems to understand) and Freddie with Shannon for a triple-date with her and Gibby so that she won't be alone with him during the date. During the date they try to make Gibby be like Freddie to get Shannon interested in him but to no avail.
The date ends with a shirtless Gibby dancing on the table with another girl, while the trio leaves the restaurant.
Subplot
After Spencer has a bad experience with a blind date, Carly suggests he should try using an online dating site. Spencer ends up posting several videos on it with humorous results. In the end, Spencer gets ten responses to his last video: four from women in prison, three from women who just got out of prison, two from psychologists who feel they can "help" Spencer, and one from a man (with a very feminine appearance).

Trivia
- Shown as part of an "iCarly Double-Date Night," followed by the episode iHave a Lovesick Teacher.
- This is the first episode to seriously focus on Gibby.
- Whynotdateme.com used to redirect to iCarly.com, as do most fake websites mentioned on the show.
- When Gibby throws himself on the beanbag you can see the special shoes Nathan Kress wore in the first season to appear taller.
- It is revealed that Pam Puckett previously had chicken pox and Sam forced Carly to rub calamine lotion all over her to get rid of it.
- Gibby accidentally choosing Carly instead of Shannon despite her rebellious answers are hints to his true personality and also foreshadows Shannon bailing on him later on in the episode.
- The title of the episode is mentioned when they make an iCarly segment called, "I Win a Date".
- This episode marks the only appearances of Shannon and Reuben.
- Teaser title: "iMatchmaker"
Allusions
- For one of his dating websites videos, Spencer goes for a "natural" approach and records a 9-minute tape of himself eating cereal, with no dialog. This may be a reference to one-time Democratic Party presidential hopeful Mike Gravel who became an Internet sensation in 2007 for posting a campaign video to YouTube that consisted mostly of him staring at the camera without speaking for several minutes, throwing a rock into a pond, and then walking away, (ironically, he didn't win).
- The dating game show is a lot similar to the UK game show Blind Date hosted by Cilla Black in which a girl asks 3 different men questions then picks one, then they go on a date.
- Blind Date is similar to the American show The Dating Game and the Australian show Perfect Match.
- The Cheesecake Warehouse is a parody of The Cheesecake Factory. It is mentioned in several other episodes, including iTwins.
Character Revelations
- Gibby reveals in this episode that his middle name is "Cornelius."
Goofs
- Gibby probably would have known that girl number 2 was Shannon because Shannon said "Hi, Freddie" while testing out her voice and it's common knowledge that Carly and Sam do not look to date Freddie (although both Carly and Sam later date him).
- In this episode, Sam asks if anyone wants some chicken wings, but in iFind Lewbert's Lost Love Carly says she's a vegetarian (although even if Carly's claim is true, she might have become vegetarian in the time between the episodes).
- It is nighttime during the webcast, but in the exterior shot of Bushwell Plaza after the commercial break, it is daytime.
Running Gags
- Shannon flirting with Freddie.
- Reuben speaks in cryptic English, using phrases like, "You don't need bubble wrap to know when it's chowder time."
Series Continuity
- Spencer wears a t-shirt saying "Pump up the Fruit", a reference to iCarly Saves TV.
- It is noticeable in this episode, along with iFence and iHave a Lovesick Teacher, Freddie's voice is starting to change. In the first episode of the second season, it has completely changed.
- Spencer kills another goldfish after killing several in iDon't Want to Fight.
